A RETIRED accountant has been left scarred for life after being robbed in his own home by a violent thug.

The victim suffered a fractured skull after he was set upon by Sean Ward during a terrifying attack in the 69 year-old’s flat in Greenock last December.

The pensioner had a Buckfast bottle smashed over his head, was struck with a knife and repeatedly kicked.

A neighbour came to his aid before armed police eventually arrived and apprehended Ward.

The 29-year-old, from Port Glasgow, is today behind bars after he pleaded guilty yesterday to assaulting and robbing the man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement on December 16.

Ward – who has a history of violence and animal cruelty – will be sentenced in September.

Prosecutor Michael MacIntosh told the High Court in Glasgow the victim lived alone.

He was confronted after he initially heard banging at his front door around 10.30pm.

The fiscal said: “He opened the door and was told ‘give me your money’.

"The elderly gentleman was then hit on the head with a weapon, which appears to have been a Buckfast bottle.”

The victim lay stricken on the floor as Ward, inset, ransacked his home looking for cash.

A concerned neighbour raised the alarm and after armed response officers arrived, the shocked senior citizen was helped out of his flat.

Police remained at the scene for some time, pictured.

The man later confirmed around £500 was missing from his flat and the court heard DNA evidence from the scene linked Ward to the crime.

Mr MacIntosh said the victim had suffered a fracture to his skull and a number of cuts to his head during the attack.

He added: “The injuries will result in permanent scarring.”

Lord Matthews remanded Ward in custody pending sentencing on September 8 in Airdrie.
