A GREENOCK university student who spent all last year in a stuck in a flat away from home during lockdown is delighted to be back in action helping children in Larkfield this summer.

Amy O'Neill, who has been leading the busy programme of activities at Youth Connections this summer, is one of thousands of university students across the country who were forced to study online during the pandemic.

The 21-year-old spent the entire third year of her graphic design course at Edinburgh University, studying from a room in the capital.

Now back home for the summer, she has been at the youth club in Burns Square helping youngsters enjoy their holidays.

Activities co-ordinator Amy, from Rankin Rise in Greenock, said: "It is just so lovely to be taking part in something like this and to be around people again.

"It was really hard this last year - I had to study in a bedroom in a flat I share with friends in Edinburgh.

"It just wasn't the same and was difficult for everyone.

"It was particularly hard because my course is hands on and practical, but we couldn't go to lectures.

"It has been very tough being a student during the pandemic, so I hope it goes back to normal this year."

Former St Columba's High pupil Amy, who studies at the College of Art at Edinburgh University, has been involved with Youth Connection for a number of years, helping with art activities.

She was delighted to step in when manager Alex Stevens asked her to lead the arts and crafts classes this summer.

Talented Amy and the team have helped put together a fantastic range of activities, all free of charge.

The three-week programme involves arts and crafts, bootcamps, dancing, drama and music.

Organiser Alex is thrilled to have Amy and other experts on board.

He said: "It is great to have people like Amy here leading the activities."

Amy now hopes to use the experience she has built up to help with her studies and her future.

She added: "I love working with Youth Connections and the youngsters.

"It is a fantastic place and all the activities on offer are brilliant."
