HOCKEY camps during the summer holidays have been hailed a huge hit in Inverclyde.

The sessions were organised by Morton in the Community over the last seven weeks.

Little sports stars like Ardgowan Primary pupil Iona Quigley, aged eight, have been lining up for a game.

Now it's hoped that the summer camp will encourage more children to come along to training sessions with Ton.

Hockey club coach Lauren McInnes said: "Our camps have been great fun.

"I have played hockey since I was at school and it is a great game.

"We want to reach out to as many children as possible.

"The camps are very popular and the multi use games area at Inverclyde Academy has been ideal."

Active eight-year-old Iona was inspired to take up the game because her dad is a player.

She said: "My dad plays hockey and I love it as well.

"It has been a great summer, I have been very busy playing hockey and tennis and had swimming lessons as well."

Murray Brown, a St Mary's Primary pupil, added: "Hockey is a great game and you have to be tough, the tackles go in hard."

Morton in the Community teamed up with Inverclyde Council and other organisations as part of the local authority's Summer of Fun programme, funded by the Scottish Government.

For seven weeks there was a full programme of events including sport, art, drama and music, with a big party set to take place at Battery Park to round it off.
