A GENEROUS Greenock man is going the extra mile to raise vital funds for the specialist team who cared for his much-loved late mum.

Corey Beaton is taking on the Inverclyde Stride, organised by the Inverclyde Community Fund, to pay tribute to his mother Lorna, who tragically died in 2019 aged just 52 after a brave battle with cancer.

The mum-of-two was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, however a year later was given the all clear.

However in 2015, Lorna received the devastating news that the cancer had returned and had spread to her bones and various organs.

Lorna, her husband Scott, Corey and his brother Lyle were supported by Ardgowan Hospice during her battle and Corey is now looking to thank them for their efforts.

The 21-year-old, who is studying law, told the Tele: "After my mum was diagnosed with cancer the second time, we were told she only had 18 months to live.

"Through sheer willpower and determination, she fought so hard and we were able to have another four brilliant years with her.

"In that time the hospice played such a big role in her life. She was able to go for respite care and was also an outpatient who attended groups every Friday.

"As a family we wouldn't have made it through those years without Ardgowan, so this is my way of saying thank you."

Corey - who is a trustee of the Inverclyde Community Fund - will be walking from Parklea Branching Out to the Inverkip Community Hub on Saturday morning.

He will be accompanied by scores of other people who are taking on the challenge, or shorter versions of the route, for various good causes.

Corey, who also works behind the bar at the Old Wherry Tavern in Gourock, added: "We know that charities have really struggled this past year and a half, so this is an opportunity for us to come together as a community and raise funds.

"I chose Ardgowan Hospice as they've been a recurring part of my life, but we have all ages walking for various good causes.

"The event itself has been very well supported and we're looking forward to the day."

Also taking part on Saturday is Helen McCormick, vice chair of the Inverclyde Community Fund, who praised Corey's efforts.

She said: "What a legacy he is making in memory of his mum.

"It is outstanding that he is taking part for such a good cause.

"I am delighted the event is going ahead as planned this year and can't wait to see everyone on the day as they raise funds for causes close to their hearts."
