SUPERHEROES from a Port Glasgow building firm reached new heights to bring a smile to the faces of sick kids.

Five big-hearted workers from Balmore Group, based at Kelburn Business Park, abseiled down the side of the main Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) building in Glasgow dressed as five famous faces.

The charity escapade was watched by youngsters from their rooms in the Royal Hospital for Children, which links to the QEUH.

The stunt has raised more than £3,400 for the Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity (GCHC).

Worker Michael Bishop was Spiderman on the day, joined by Stephen Hogg as Iron Man, Damian Clark as Superman, Stuart Brisbane as Batman and Roxanne McKinlay as Supergirl.

Balmore specialises in unmanned aviation inspections and all of the team have qualifications from the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association and lots of experience of descending from buildings as part of their job.

Michael and the team had been working on a project at QEUH for two months and finished around three weeks ago.

He said: "We started thinking about doing something when we were getting closer to the end of the project.

"This is something we do in the job anyway, we're used to travelling down the side of buildings.

"We just wanted to cheer the kids up and put a smile on their wee faces, so we thought we would dress up.

"They've had so much disruption in their lives over the last 18 months.

"Seeing what the kids go through puts everything into perspective."

As Covid regulations are still in place, the youngsters weren't able to meet the heroes face-to-face but could still have their photos taken through their windows.

The fab five descended from the hospital's helipad to just above the garden area.

Michael hopes the abseil brought smiles to the faces of staff and families as well as the youngsters and says he's overwhelmed by the amount raised so far for GCHC.

Michael added: "It's great that we could celebrate the end of the project in a way that cheered everyone up as well as raising much-needed money."
