GREENOCK’S season ended without a ball being bowled in their final Premier Division match.

The wet weather during Friday and overnight into Saturday put paid to the game against Stirling County.

It was a disappointing end to what has been one of Greenock’s least memorable seasons.

The Glenpark side are now relegated to the First Division of the Western District Cricket Union (WDCU), and plans are already being put in place to strengthen the playing squad to try and ensure that the club will make a speedy return to the Premier Division in 2023.

The winner-takes-all clash between the top two teams in the Premier Division did go ahead in Paisley where Ferguslie, in second top spot, were at home to league leaders Clydesdale.

In a high-scoring match worthy of the title decider, Clydesdale defeated Ferguslie by the very narrowest of margins in a cliff-hanger of a finish.

The winning runs were scored with just two balls of the match remaining and with Clydesdale’s last two batsmen at the crease.

Ferguslie batted first and scored 248 all out after 48.5 overs with their captain Riyaad Henry top scoring with a magnificent 115.

In reply, Clydesdale scored 249 for the loss of nine wickets, and owed their win to a fine seventh wicket partnership between Imran Mughal (74) and Zeeshan Bashir (38), who came together at a time when Ferguslie looked odds-on favourites to lift the title.
