TWO Port councillors want an urgent review over bank and post office closures in the town.

Councillors Jim MacLeod and Chris Curley have been campaigning to highlight ATM closures in the Port Glasgow town centre.

Locals have lost three banking branches from the town centre - RBS, Clydesdale and TSB - plus a post office and fourth ATM, due to the closure of the Spar shop.

Mr MacLeod said: "Constituents continue to contact me about the ongoing problems they face trying to get cash from the ATM in the town centre and now on occasions at the Tesco ATM in the retail park too.

"It is a ridiculous situation that needs to be sorted.

"I have put a motion together that will be heard by Inverclyde Council this week.

"It calls on the council to regularly review bank and post office closures across Inverclyde and asks the chief executive to write to the relevant UK Government minister stating our concerns about the impact this has on individuals, communities and the local economy.

His SNP colleague Chris Curley is seconding the motion being presented to a Municipal Buildings meeting tomorrow.

He said: "The lack of access to post office, banking and cash facilities in Port Glasgow town centre is creating problems for people, not just those who live in the town centre.

"I have received representations on the negative impact of this from a number of constituents.

"It is no good having shops if you have no access to cash and it is important that we remember that for a large section of the population moving to internet banking and using card or contactless payments instead of cash is not a practical solution."
