MORTON Club Together founder Graham McLennan has today called on the Inverclyde community to be a part of the club’s new era now that it’s in their hands.

Mr McLennan believes that the rise of the fans’ investment group is ‘nothing short of remarkable’ and hopes that the whole of Inverclyde will come out in numbers to support their club.

The MCT director says completing the historic takeover was an emotional moment and he has paid tribute to the supporters who helped make the dream a reality.

He told the Tele: “When you look back on it, the story of Morton Club Together to go from being started up, getting its first pledges and to then being community owners of Greenock Morton within the space of two and a half years is nothing short of remarkable.

“This is a massive day for not only Morton but for Inverclyde as a whole, they can now get behind their own club.

“The biggest achievement is the people who have helped us, all of our members, the people inside and out of MCT — journalists, lawyers, accountants — it’s all been about people helping and helping other people.

“We’ve created an opportunity for the community to grab with both hands here, to make things that bit brighter on both sides of the equation.

“It’s now about making folk welcome at Morton and it’s about the club building on the great work that they and also the Community Trust have done and the community embracing it.

“We need to set that alight.

“To be honest it’s hard to put it into words now that we’ve got here.

“The most emotional I’ve felt the full way along was the day that MCT launched on April 26 in 2019, because I was genuinely just the guy who put my head above the parapet.
“It was sitting the next day and seeing the first pledges coming through that I actually cried because that’s when I knew that this would be possible.

“That immediately led me to believe that this could work and we’ve now made it into a reality.”

Mr McLennan is adamant that everyone involved has created a bit of history and he hopes that they can help all the hard work come to fruition as the fresh era on Sinclair Street begins.

He added: “It’s not just myself who has created a bit of history here, it’s everyone involved with Morton Club Together.

“I’m confident that I’m not the only person who had the idea but I’d got to that point in life and as a Morton fan where I wanted to see if it would work.

“We knew the Rae family’s position which was public knowledge and I thought ‘the time is now’.

“The club is now owned by the community and that’s the big picture here.

“It’s all been made possible by the people who have come forward and will continue to do so.

“We’ve got the message out there, it’s now about the hard work starting and putting it into action now.”
