Big-hearted bowlers from across Inverclyde have raised over £1,000 for Ardgowan Hospice through their annual fundraising wapenshaw.

The bowlers raised £1,090 for the Greenock-based cancer charity, their highest total since the event began over 25 years ago.

The competition, held at Port Glasgow Bowling Club, saw teams from all 14 Greenock & District bowling clubs participate, along with two additional teams representing the hospice and the Greenock & District directors.

Each of the 14 clubs also made their own donations and held wapenshaws to raise additional funds.

The cheques were presented to the hospice at Ardgowan Bowling Club by Greenock & District junior vice-president John McLean.

Vice-president McLean praised the hospice's work, saying: "On behalf of President Ernie McElwee, the directors of the Greenock & District and the 14 clubs of the Greenock & District, I'd like to thank the hospice for their continued work.

"It's been a proud occasion to present the cheques to them today in this, our 75th year."

Elaine McNeill, Fundraising officer at Ardgowan Hospice added: "Greenock & District are always really good supporters of the hospice, we're delighted to receive this cheque from them. It's an amazing effort and we're glad that they continue to support us."
