RONNIE Cowan MP is backing calls for UK Government subsidies for post offices.
He says this would guarantee a minimum income for sub-postmasters and help to safeguard the future of services in Inverclyde.
The area's MP has spoken out after a string of closures locally that has left the service at breaking point.
Mr Cowan said: “Now is the time for the UK Government to provide help so that sub-postmasters and communities, such as here in Inverclyde, have certainty and stability.
“Closing Post Office branches can severely harm local communities, given that many local businesses and the most vulnerable rely on it for access to cash and other services.
“It’s important we act now to create support for the network so it can continue its valuable contribution to our society.
"This means providing the necessary funding to allow Post Office Ltd to guarantee a minimum income for every sub-postmaster so their hard work is recognised and running a branch becomes an attractive proposition once again.”
