GENEROUS footballers from a local amateur side have set their sights on a new goal - ensuring every child gets a gift this Christmas.

Sunday league side Gourock FC have teamed up with the Co-op stores across Inverclyde to launch a Christmas toy appeal to help the families that will struggle to give their children a present this festive season.

Donation points for the appeal can be found in every Co-op store in Inverclyde.

The team have said that they will only be accepting new items, however, an exception will be made for old games consoles with games.

There is a recommended spend of £10 for donations and no cap on the price of donations that will be accepted.

While this is the first time the kind squad at Gourock FC have run a toy appeal, they have supported a variety of good causes in the past.

The team regularly work with Man On Inverclyde, whose logo they wear on their kits, and they also hold foodbank collections twice a season - having delivered over £600 of food in two collections.

Adam Beaton, co-manager of Gourock FC, said: "The idea with the toy appeal is to run a collection for families who will struggle to give their children a toy this Christmas.

"Co-manager Nathan Fulton and I have always wanted a charitable aspect to the club.

"We believe every kid should get a new present this Christmas, so we won’t be accepting used toys."

The club have thanked the Co-op for their support and in particular member pioneer co-ordinator Callum Renfrew for his work organising the donation points.

Callum, who worked with local Co-op managers to set up the donation points, said the local stores were 'more than happy' to support the club's work.

He told the Tele: "The boys in the football team have been very supportive of all community projects that the Co-op have been involved with, so the least we could do is offer our stores as a collection point for the appeal, and all our Inverclyde store managers were very co-operative."

"It's great to see a young team being proactive in bettering our community and using their platform for good within the area."
