A BELOVED Italian cafe in Greenock is saying arrivederci to its iconic premises after almost 52 years of serving customers.

The West Station Cafe on Newton Street will close its doors for the last time this weekend before it reopens at its new home on November 27.

Owner Carlo Biondi admits the move is 'the end of an era' but he is looking forward to getting settled in at the new shop.

Fortunately for fans of the Cafe's delicious hot rolls, ice cream and traditional sweets counter, the new premises are on 9 Newton Street - just a stone's throw away from the old property.

Carlo told the Tele that the pandemic had played a part in his decision to do away with the sit-in side of the cafe, as well as a general decline in the public's appetite for sitting-in.

Located across the street from Gianni's Chip Shop, the new shop will be takeaway only, but it is keeping its familiar West Station Cafe branding.

The distinctive decor is also staying - Carlo's collection of Juventus FC paraphernalia, Italian flags and famous photographs is boxed up and ready to make the move.

The cafe has been in the Biondi family's hands for over 50 years.

Carlo's parents, Lucy and Angelo, took it over in the early 70s.

The couple ran the establishment for over a decade and were well-known for their warm welcome, fine food and hugely popular home-made ice cream.

Carlo - who began running the cafe 42 years ago - says that some of the current regulars have been coming since it opened, having been patrons of his parents' previous premises on Westburn Street.

He says he has been moved by the outpouring of support and fond farewells that the cafe's move was announced.

He has thanked his regulars and the people of Greenock for their custom over the past five decades.

Carlo told the Tele: "It's the end of an era.

"My whole life's been here.

"I'll miss the characters that come in and having a chat with them all.

"I'll miss the customers coming in for coffees and teas, I'll miss that side of things.

"I want to thank everyone that's come in over the years, we hope to see you all at the new premises."
