A SENIOR councillor has slammed the Scottish Government’s decision to limit football attendances to 500 for the next three weeks.

The announcement made by Nicola Sturgeon has been attacked by Alba's Chris McEleny, who says it shows a government 'out of touch'.

He said: "Only last week the national clinical director Jason Leitch highlighted that outdoor football matches are environments 'the virus doesn’t like'.

"By banning people from watching football in regulated environments we will simply force them to gather in households - where there will be poor ventilation, no face coverings worn, alcohol flowing, and unlikely that you’ll be asked at the doorway to show your proof of vaccine status."

Mr McEleny says that the government will have to fork out if they carry on with the policy.

He said: “If they proceed with this policy we must see financial aid come to smaller football clubs that rely on attendances."
