A SHIPPING company has confirmed that crew members on a container ship visiting Greenock did test positive for Covid.

The Telegraph told last week that up to eight members had the virus on MSC Samira III, which was berthed at the Ocean Terminal, but operators MSC stated there were 'no confirmed cases onboard'.

In a new statement, the firm said it had 'received updated information' of confirmed cases of coronavirus on board.

They said the affected seafarers were placed in quarantine with access to medical treatment and that all crew members were being tested and monitored for symptoms.

A replacement crew arrived and the vessel was scheduled for a deep clean.

She has since resumed service, leaving Greenock at the end of last week.

MSC said: "The health and wellbeing of our people will always be our top priority.

"Since the beginning of the Covid-19 outbreak we have implemented robust health protection measures across our fleet and the seafarers who operate our ships.

"In addition, we observe guidance and instructions from local authorities in relation to vessel and cargo operations wherever we go."
