POLICE have launched a probe after a referee headbutted a supporter at a Port Glasgow United game.
The match had to be abandoned in the 92nd minute after the incident involving the official and a 21-year-old spectator.
Videos posted on twitter show bystanders pulling the referee away after the incident.
The fixture on Saturday between the Port and Paisley side Stanley Athletic was at King George V playing fields in Renfrew.
Police yesterday confirmed that they are looking into the incident.
A police spokesperson said: "Officers have received a report of an assault on a 21-year-old man around 12pm on Saturday. Enquiries are continuing."
A source claimed to the Tele that the person involved was not with the Port Glasgow United contingent.
A Port Glasgow United spokesperson said: "It would be inappropriate for us to comment at this time."
