FOOTBALL bosses are trying to trace a Greenock player who made history when she lined up in the first ever Scotland v England women's fixture 50 years ago.

The Scottish Schools Football Association vice-president Gillian Duffy, who is also from the town, is hoping to track down Marion Mount or her family to come along to Ravenscraig Stadium as VIPs for a forthcoming game to mark the special anniversary.

The under-15s national girls side will take each other on in Inverclyde in May in honour of the milestone.

When the sides meet there will be other local connections too, as lining up in the game will be local schoolgirl Millie Paton.

SSFA official Gillian, who lives in Greenock, said: "We would very much like Marion or her family to come along as special guests for the game.

"We have been unable to trace them so far.

"All we know is Marion was from Greenock and played in the team."

As girls football continues to go from strength to strength the SSFA is excited at the prospect of the game at Ravenscraig on Sunday May 15.

Clydeview Academy pupil Millie will be playing in it after she was recently selected for the squad from among a record number of trialists from Inverclyde.

The team recently got off to a great start, taking on Northern Ireland in Belfast and coming home with a 6-3 victory.

Long-serving coach, volunteer and former PE teacher Gillian, from Greenock, recently broke new ground when she became the first woman to take on the vice president role at the SSFA.

She is assistant coach of the u-15s girls and recently won a football hero award for her service to the game.

The fixture at Ravenscraig marks half a century from the first official match when Marion and her Scottish team-mates took a two goal lead before England fought back to win 3-2.

The game broke new ground as women's football was still officially banned in Scotland at the time - and would remain so for another two years.
