YOUNG fighters pulled no punches when they bagged FIVE medals at a national championships.

Inverclyde Boxing Club members saw off hundreds of competitors to take home three golds and two silvers at the Boxing Scotland National Novice Championships.

It was a tremendous achievement for a club which is in its first year of affiliation with governing body Boxing Scotland.

Club manager Robert McMaster hopes that the youngsters can now build on their success.

Robert says he is extremely proud of the grit shown by all eight of the young club members who fought at the contest in Motherwell.

He said: "To see them go from weans who couldn't throw a punch or skip, to coming in here four or five times a week has been incredible.

"I love watching them compete and it was brilliant to see them win.

"As far as fitness goes, there won't be many kids better than them.

"They've given a great account of themselves at what is one of the biggest martial arts tournaments in Europe in terms of the number of entries.

"Some of them obviously came away with a defeat, but they all gave me 100 per cent.

"For our first year affiliated as a wee club this is a fantastic achievement."

Conor Jordan, Abbigael Crawford and Noah Waddell were the club's gold medalists, while Jonah Waddell and Logan McEwan picked up silver.

It was a tense day for Logan, who had worked hard in training to cut down his weight and refine his technique.

The youngster said: "There was a lot of waiting about and getting ready, I was really nervous.

"But it ended up alright, I managed to get a silver.

"I had to do a lot of training but it paid off in the end.

"It felt so good to get a medal."
