A CRIMINAL investigation has been launched into allegations of racism made against members of the Greenock Wanderers coaching staff.

Police Scotland says that its officers are probing an alleged 'hate crime' after a complaint was made following a match at Fort Matilda in January.

The Tele reported that month how Dylan Skibinski, 18, claimed that he had been subjected to repeated abuse from the touchline during a match in which he scored the winning try for Strathmore against Wanderers.

The police investigation is running in tandem with a separate probe by Scottish Rugby.

In a further development, it has emerged that Wanderers coaches have sought legal representation as both investigations into the matter continue.

Mr Skibinski told in January how he was so 'disgusted' that he refused to shake hands with any of the Greenock coaches at the end of the game.

He said: "Every time the opposing winger got the ball there were shouts of, 'Run at the Paki' and, 'Hit the Paki'.

"I was in a bit of disbelief at first."

Mr Skibinski — who is of part-Thai descent — added: "I've been exposed to racism my whole life, but being subjected to it on the pitch, with an audience there, it was right in my face."

His father, Stefan, said at the time: "This is disgraceful behaviour and especially at this level, where everyone is an adult.

"I can't believe that anyone would think this is acceptable behaviour."

Governing body bosses at Murrayfield say they are still gathering information into the alleged incident.

A spokesman for Scottish Rugby said: "Scottish Rugby's investigation into alleged racist comments directed towards a player in the match between Strathmore and Greenock Wanderers remains ongoing at this time while we await further information with which to conclude our due disciplinary process."

A Police Scotland spokeswoman told the Telegraph: "Enquiries are ongoing following a report of a hate crime."

The president of Greenock Wanderers, David McIlroy, said in January that the club was 'shocked to hear that an allegation has been made in this manner' and pledged to 'deal with it swiftly and thoroughly'.

Mr McIlroy said yesterday: "The club and its staff are co-operating fully with all appropriate authorities and have no further comment to make at this time."
