A GREENOCK primary school is proudly showing support for the people of war-torn Ukraine with a display of flower power.

Pupils at Aileymill Primary have been creating their own sunflower emblems in support of the invaded country and put them on display around the school.

Youngsters across the school had the chance to craft their own sunflower - in honour of Ukraine's national flower - and primary seven class teacher Stephanie Roy put the colourful creations up across the school.

Stephanie told the Tele: "We've been working on it for a few weeks as we were inspired to do something to show our support for Ukraine.

"It's a way for the children to show their solidarity with the country and learn what is happening in the world.

"They've all been able to do their own interpretation, so we've got all shapes and sizes of sunflowers which we are displaying around the school."

Pupils Caitlin Hamilton, Skye McCabe and Hannah Gorman, all 11, and 10-year-old Mollie Carson were pleased to get a chance to show their support for Ukrainians.

Caitlin said: "It has been great to do this as a whole school.

"Our class used oil pastels to create our sunflowers.

"They all look really nice together."

School head teacher Catriona Miller added: "At Aileymill we believe that every child should be learning to learn and care, and this ethos underpins all that we do.

"This is an example of that, being able to learn about Ukraine and show our solidarity as a school community is something I am very proud of."
