VOLUNTEERS teamed up with local residents to clean up a Gourock beach.

Greenock West & Cardwell Bay community councillors and members of the public managed to fill eight bags of rubbish with litter removed from Cardwell Bay.

The tidy up was the first beach clean the community council has run since the pandemic began - and the group are hoping to hold more as the year goes on now that Covid restrictions have been lifted.

Items removed from the shoreline included plastic, wet wipes and fishing lines.

Community council secretary Gillian Maxwell told the Tele: "We had a fabulous day, it was good to be back out cleaning up in the community again.

"We kept an eye on the weather but fortunately it stayed nice for us.

"The clean up was timed to get the place cleaned up ahead of the Highland Games.

"We love our community, we like to see it looking good.

"We want to say a big thanks to Cornalees for letting us borrow their litter pickers, as well as the Marine Conservation Society and Inverclyde Council.

"Beach cleans like this one are a good way for people of all ages to do something for their area.

"We'll hopefully be able to hold more in the near future and we'd love for residents to come along and join in."
