THE cream of the sporting crop in Inverclyde was honoured as a major prizegiving returned for the first time in three years.

The Sports Personality Awards returned to Greenock Town Hall after the lengthy hiatus caused by the coronavirus pandemic, with individual stars and teams honoured.

Organisers of the event say they were delighted with the 'great turnout' at the big bash where trophies for eight award categories were won.

Runner Jonny Glen claimed the senior prize, while team of the year went to Greenock Wanderers Ladies.

Athlete Lewis Hainey took home the junior personality prize.

Three new grants were also awarded, to tennis ace Jim Lyon, young cricketer Sean Fischer-Keogh and bowling stalwart Sandra Watters.

Awards spokesperson Chris Jewell said: "It was so good to be back with the local sporting community gathering again for this special evening.

"As well as the awards themselves, so well hosted by presenters Amber Zoe and Mike McLean, we heard from football commentator and pundit Chick Young and there was great music from The Laurettes plus some fun and very clever table magic during an excellent meal from ICE Catering and Events.

"Very well done to all the winners and finalists, and thanks to all who attended.

"We must also thank our sponsors Inverclyde Council, Inverclyde Leisure, sportscotland, West College Scotland, Amazon Gourock, Reid Mackellar, Auto-Tec Port Glasgow and New Horizons Marketing for making the evening and the awards possible.

"And because of these sponsors and the responses from the auction and raffle, we will be able to make more grants available to aspiring individual local sports people young and older.

"The grant application form is available at www.inverclydesportspersonality.com/grantsscheme.

"Sporting activities have returned with a bang and already we are greatly looking forward to our next awards, taking place in early 2023."
