A YOUNG boxing champion from Greenock has proved a knockout success after clinching a spot in a global contest.

Noah Waddell has been selected to represent Scotland in the World Boxing Championship, in a Muay Thai bout, and he is hoping to land a world junior title.

The 13-year-old Notre Dame High pupil is going to Calgary in August where he will show off his Muay Thai skills in a bid to come out on top.

The youngster, who recently won a Scottish novices boxing title, has had to give back his boxing card in order to compete at the competition in the 42-44kg category.

Noah, whose big transatlantic trip will be his first time on a plane, said: "I'm so buzzing.

"It's a lot of work but I've been training really hard.

"I have never been to Canada before, so I'm so looking forward to the experience.

"I already know a few people who are going from Scotland too."

Before Noah and the other Scots youngsters fly over to Canada, they will get together for a special health retreat to prepare mentally and physically and get to know each other.

Proud dad Mark, who also has an involvement in the sport, says Noah's determination for success has been prominent since a 'very young age'.

The boxing man, also dad to young fighter Jonah, said: "Noah is so stubborn, he's said ever since he was a wee boy that he wants to be a world champion in something.

"He's an incredibly hard worker and has a great support network around him.

"His coaches, Urban Fit Company, and his stepmum Stacey are big supporters.

"I'm really proud of him.

"This will be a brilliant experience for Noah and he deserves it so much."

Noah is currently looking for sponsorship to help fund his trip across the globe and any interested firms can get in touch with Mark by emailing markwaddell12@googlemail.com.
