FUNDRAISING pedal power from Inverclyde has gone to help Ukrainian orphans.

Members of the district's cycling club have decided to donate their annual membership fees to the Dnipro Kids charity.

Kind-hearted Inverclyde Velo bikers contacted the good cause — set up by Hibernian FC fans — after unanimously agreeing to the gesture as the war with Russia rages on.

Dnipro Kids recently helped to evacuate 48 orphans from the Ukranian city across the border to Poland and then to Scotland.

Inverclyde Velo president George McCarter said: "The idea to donate the club fees for the current year was discussed at our recent annual general meeting.

"All of our members were in agreement.

"We are happy to be able to help Dnipro Kids in this way."

Club members raised a total of £600 for the charity.

Inverclyde Velo has been at the centre of cycling locally for more than 30 years.

The club welcomes people of all abilities across a range of cycling activities, from time trials and road racing to mountain biking and gravel biking and social riding.

The club meets at Hunter Place in Greenock for weekend rides with the Saturday group departing at 8am for a 45 mile social ride around Erskine, Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm before heading back to Greenock for coffee at The Cottage cafe.

The Sunday group departs at 9am for a 55 mile ride which usually includes Lochwinnoch, West Kilbride and a coffee stop at Largs before heading home via the Brisbane Glen and Loch Thom.

The rides are open to newcomers and are classed as ‘no drop’ rides, meaning that no one gets left behind at any point of the ride.
