MYSTERY surrounds the closure of a popular Gourock bakery after its doors shut suddenly.

The Bake House on Kempock Street had been popular with locals but trading recently came to a halt and the unit is now lying empty.

Following the closure, a note was pinned to the property's front door stating that the business had closed due to a technical issue and that it would re-open soon.

But several weeks on the premises are not back in business, with customers saying they are sad to see it go from the bustling town centre.

One local told the Tele that it was 'a real shame' to see the cafe disappear from Kempock Street.

The man, who didn't want to be named, said: "I used to go there regularly before it shut up shop, I haven't heard anything since they closed.

"Some people have said that they're closed for good.

"The food was good and the staff were lovely too, it's a pity they have been left out of work.

"The sign that was put up on the door said that they were waiting on Scottish Power engineers to come out, but that has since been taken down so no one knows what is going on.

"Hopefully they re-open, but if not it would be good to see someone else take it over quickly.

"Nobody wants to see a unit lying empty on such a successful street like this."

The pastry shop has been a fixture of Kempock Street since it opened in 2016, selling a range of bread, baked goods, breakfasts, coffees and other hot drinks.

While the bakery is listed online as 'permanently closed' on Google, no announcement has been made by the owners about the establishment.

The Bake House did not respond to the Tele's repeated attempts to contact them about the closure.
