A GREENOCK squash court has been given a four-figure facelift.

The Glenpark Cricket Club facility has undergone an amazing £8,500 transformation - including the installation of new specialist lighting, newly-sanded floors and a re-faced front wall.

It is one of the few squash courts left in the area, and the club's convener Douglas Montgomery says he is 'delighted' to have future-proofed a sporting space that has been well-used since the 1970's.

He told the Tele: "We have wanted to do this for a long time as we are one of the last few remaining courts in Inverclyde. We did not want to see this be allowed to vanish.

"We've spent over £8,000 completing the works, which are being enjoyed greatly by our members.

"I don't think many people realise that we are here, so we hope that by highlighting the renovations in the Telegraph, locals will perhaps come along and give the sport a try."

Douglas, who has been playing squash for almost 50 years, says members are able to come and go as they please and there is equipment available to use at the Brisbane Street club.

He continued: "The sport is gaining popularity, so we are very lucky to have this facility here in Inverclyde.

"People are welcome to bring along their own equipment, or we have equipment that they can borrow and try.

"It is a very easy booking system and people can access the squash court at all hours of the day."

Currently around 25 members frequently use the facility for a small supplement on top of the cricket club fees.

Club president Charlie Loftus added: "We are really pleased to have completed the renovations and have people along to be able to enjoy the facilities.

"It is a fantastic social scene and squash is also a brilliant form of exercise. We would encourage anyone who wants to give the sport a try to get in touch and give it a go."
