PORT pupils were introduced to the wonderful world of work through a special careers event as they get ready to move on to secondary school.

Newark Primary's P7 class enjoyed an event which brought together over 15 different representatives from various industries to shine a light on what they do.

Youngsters at the Bridgend Avenue school heard from police officers, florists, journalists, church ministers, bus drivers and first aiders.

The event, organised by depute head teacher Gillian Chalmers, was the first of its kind in the school and was such a success it will now become a regular fixture.

School chaplain Reverend William Boyle told the young people about his role at the Port Glasgow New Parish Church.

The Port Glasgow minister said: "The day allowed the primary sevens to think about what their potential career could be as they prepare to enter a new exciting journey in high school.

"As their school chaplain it was great for me to spend the day with them and explain my role as parish minister and what I do when I am not at the school."

On hand to shine a light on the journalism industry was the Tele's digital audience and content editor Amy Shearer, who spoke to the young people about her job reporting across Inverclyde.

Amy said: "I was really delighted to spend time with the young people at Newark.

"They were so inquisitive and filled with so much enthusiasm about their next steps.

"I wish them all the best of luck in whatever career they choose - I'm sure many of them would make excellent Tele journalists if they ever aspired to join our team."
