INVERCLYDE'S average household size has hit a 20-year low - as more than four per cent of the area's houses lay empty.

A new report from National Records of Scotland shows that the average local household has shrunk by more than 10 per cent over the last two decades.

In its report, the NRS distinguishes between 'dwellings', which refer to accommodation such as flats or houses, and 'households', which are the people living together within a dwelling.

Inverclyde's average household size in 2021 was two, covering an estimated 37,958 households in the area.

The number of dwellings in the area grew to 39,446 in 2021, up from 39,107 the year before.

Of these, 1,866 were vacant, while a further 127 were classed as second homes.

More than 70 per cent of Inverclyde's dwellings are in council tax bands A to C, while 18 per cent are band D or E.
