RESIDENTS living in Clune Park in Port Glasgow fear that someone will end up badly injured following yet another fire on the eyesore estate.

Crew were called out as flames engulfed a derelict flat on Wallace Street at around 5pm on Thursday.

Most of the flats on the estate are now empty and Inverclyde Council has been attempting for over a decade to bulldoze the estate and clear it for regeneration.

But there is deadlock between landlords and the local authority over the properties privately owned on the estate, with council leader Stephen McCabe recently admitting that it could take another five years for progress to be made.

Fires at Clune Park have become a regular occurrence in recent years and the remaining residents there are increasingly concerned that someone will eventually come to harm.

Ann Cameron, 57, who lives on Robert Street, told the Tele that the empty buildings are dangerous.

She said: "There were three fires in different flats in Wallace Street.

“Firefighters were there a couple of hours before in Caledonia Street - it happens all the time.

“The council needs to get this place knocked down.

“You can see the cracks in the buildings walking along Glasgow Road.

"It will be a firefighter who gets hurt next, all it would take is a ceiling to fall on top of them.”

The council now owns over half the properties in Clune Park but it needs to acquire all of them if it is to press ahead with its demolition plans.

Local authority leader Mr McCabe recently indicated that it would be prepared to go through a lengthy compulsory purchase order process if necessary.

Anyone with information about the fire should call the police on 101.
