GREENOCK'S East Hamilton Street on the A8 has been reduced to single lane traffic in both directions — with the situation expected to last at least until next Thursday.

Motorists had already endured lengthy tailbacks eastbound for days but the further lane closure is needed in order for ongoing repair work to electrical cabling to be completed.

Scottish Power Energy Networks say the work is estimated to be completed by June 30.

The company's Ayrshire and Clyde South district manager, Aileen Rourke, said: "We're sorry for any inconvenience this may cause and would urge those travelling on the A8 to allow a bit more time for their journeys while these essential repair works are carried out, especially in light of the ongoing rail strike.

"We always work to keep the impact of our works to a minimum and thank the community in advance for their patience and understanding while the temporary traffic lights are in place."
