MINDLESS vandals taking part in a dangerous 'prank' are putting lives at risk by ripping fuses out of street lights in Larkfield and leaving live wires exposed.

They have targeted dozens of lampposts in the estate, breaking the control panels and then plunging large residential areas into darkness.

Concerned ward councillors James Daisley and John Crowther have today urgently issued a dire warning that the 'stupidity' must stop before someone is electrocuted.

Those behind the attacks have targeted areas around Burns Road and Westmorland Road, with electricians having to be sent out to make them safe.

Councillor Crowther, who is the local authority's designated safety champion, said: "This is deplorable behaviour.

"It could ultimately lead to loss of life.

"A child could touch a live feed before power reaches the fuse."

Council workers have had to step in and act quickly to repair the damage before anyone is killed or seriously injured by the exposed live wires.

Mr Crowther said: "I just do now know why people would be doing this.

"There is also the inherent danger of pedestrians tripping over kerbs or obstructions during the hours of darkness when the lights are knocked out.

"I am urging anyone who sees suspicious behaviour around street lighting columns to report it immediately.”

Cllr Daisley added: “This is leaving large areas in the dark until the street lighting is repaired.

"Electricians have been making them safe and more fuses are on their way from Scottish Power.

"Both Councillor Crowther and I grew up in Larkfield and we know what a fantastic community it is, and what great people live here.

"For a small group of vandals to target and tarnish the reputation of the area we care about is utterly reprehensible and they must be caught and held to account.”
