A HIT and run drunk driver rammed his Volvo into the back of another car which had a young girl passenger on board on the A78 through Greenock.

Jamie Dorrian had been boozing with pals in a pub and watching football before getting behind the wheel and causing the smash.

The 28-year-old initially got out of his car to apologise to the driver of the Audi A3 he'd just hit — but then drove off.

Dorrian was later forcibly removed from the Volvo by a member of the public who had spotted him performing 'erratic moves', the sheriff court was told.

Prosecutor Pamela Brady said: "A witness was driving his car eastbound on the A78 and had slowed for a 30mph zone.

"The witness became aware of a black Volvo car in his rear view mirror closing in on him and he anticipated a collision.

"The Volvo collided with the back of his car and shunted it forward.

"The witness's young daughter was in the car.

"The accused came out of his car and was apologetic to the witness.

"Airbags had been deployed in the accused's car.

"He said that he would move his car out of the the live lane and exchange details with the witness.

"However, he [Dorrian] then drove off and the witness contacted the police."

Dorrian made his way through residential streets to Jean Armour Place before eventually bringing his car to a stop.

He was slurring his speech after a member of the public confronted him, the court was told.

Fiscal depute Mrs Brady said: "The witness shouted for a neighbour to call the police.

"The witness reached into the car and removed the keys from the ignition and then removed the accused from the car by force.

"Police arrived to find the accused on a grass verge with the witness standing beside him.

"The accused indicated he had been in the pub earlier in the day with friends for football."

Dorrian failed a roadside breath test.

He was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital due to a concern that he might have Covid and blood tests were eventually used to determine his alcohol reading for court.

He had 122 milligrams of booze in 100ml of blood.

The legal limit is 50 milligrams.

Dorrian, of Cardwell Road in Gourock, committed the offences on May 2 last year.

Defence lawyer Aidan Gallagher said: "He has only one previous conviction in 2012 and he is in full-time employment as a marine engineer.

"He has no difficulties as such with alcohol.

"This has been an aberration on his part."

Sheriff Michael Higgins deferred sentence until July 13 for a background report and electronic tagging assessment to be completed.
