A FIRE chief has hit out over the number of deliberate blazes being started by youths in Inverclyde.

Almost 300 deliberate fires were set across the district and its neighbouring Renfrewshire areas last summer, meaning that crews attended the equivalent of more than four deliberate fires every day.

Figures released by the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service show the number of incidents rose rapidly from the same period in 2020, when 158 deliberate fires were recorded.

While most were outdoor incidents on grasslands or refuse being set alight, others included building and vehicle fires.

Area Commander David McCarrey, says this is 'unacceptable' and that he wants to avoid a repeat this summer as schools knock off between now and mid-August for the big break.

He has also urged parents to be mindful and speak to their children about the risks of fire-raising.

Mr McCarrey said: "While I’m keen not to stigmatise our young people, we can’t escape the fact that the statistical data and evidence points to periods of time when schools are on holiday.

"I want our young people to enjoy their holidays but I want them to do it safely and be part of the solution to this challenge across our communities.

"Parents, carers, and members of the public can all help us here by engaging with young people and laying bear the costs and consequences of starting a fire."
