A YOUNG Greenock fashion retailer who started her much-loved business aged 21 says rising costs and online shopping have forced her to call time on her shop.

Rachel Donnelly opened Twice New Clothes on West Blackhall Street in 2015 and has had a successful run buying and selling quality second hand clothing, shoes and accessories.

But now, with rising costs and the pandemic changing shopping habits, the Greenock businesswoman has taken the difficult decision to close the clothing outlet by Christmas.

The 28-year-old says she's 'extremely proud' of all she has achieved since launching over seven years ago.

She told the Tele: "I knew closure was imminent at the turn of the year - I thought we only had about six months left.

"We decided to see out cruise season as it's our most popular time - the busy summer months see us through winter when we are lucky if some days we get two customers in.

"The running costs are too high now and shopping habits have changed, the retail market is online now.

"I think we'll close our doors for the final time just before Christmas."

Rachel, who has been supported in her venture by her parents and friends, including Heather McAllister (pictured) says changes are required from the government to help second-hand businesses to survive.

She added: "There is a demand for this type of thing, especially with the cost of living rising.

"However the government need to look at how they do things - they charge VAT on items we sell, despite the fact the VAT was paid at the time it was purchased brand new.

"There is such a focus on shopping second hand and reducing waste, so I hope it is something that they look at.

"I think this type of shopping is going to boom in the next few years."

The business owner has thanked customers for their support over the years.

Rachel added: "We've been so well supported, when I announced our closure we were inundated with nice comments.

"We also have crews and holidaymakers from the cruises who return to us every year - when we've told them they have all been really gutted.

"People travel from all over to visit.

"We've had a really good run."
