COMPASSIONATE staff from a Wemyss Bay supermarket are pulling on their walking boots for a huge charity challenge in aid of a suicide awareness charity.

A total of 14 members of the team at the Co-op on Shore Road will tackle Ben Lomond on August 10 to raise cash for Tiny Changes.

The charity was set up after the tragic death of musician Scott Hutchinson of the band Frightened Rabbit, who took his own life in May 2018 at the age of just 36.

Scott's family founded the charity in his memory, with the aim of improving the mental health of children and young people across Scotland.

Co-op Wemyss Bay team member Alan Gillespie says the team there are no stranger to charity efforts, and have been spurred on for this particular challenge by staff member Max Huthwait, who is part of the management team.

Alan added: "We try our best to give to charities which mean a lot to people who work here.

"Tiny Changes has a place in the heart of a lot of people in Inverclyde. Suicide affects so many families these days and it's so important to raise awareness, as well as funds."

The team of caring climbers are aiming to go up and down the 974m Munro, which sits on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond, in a single day.

They've already raised more than £200 for their chosen cause and Alan says each of them are aiming to hit the heights by raising £100 each.

A number of other Wemyss Bay businesses have also pledged their support to the intrepid walkers too.

Alan says the challenge is 'definitely achievable' says everyone is excited taking it on.

He added: "We'll go as fast as the slowest person, it's very much a team effort.

"We're all pretty fit and it will be a good way to get our steps up!

"We're doing it for a bit of fun but there's a really serious reason behind it of course.

"Hopefully people will donate whatever they can to help us raise as much money as possible."
