A DISGUSTED Greenock man has hit out at Scottish Water after his garden was left overflowing with raw sewage for 12 DAYS.

Gerard O'Neill first contacted the water supplier on August 1 after pipes burst and sewage began erupting from a cover in his Nairn Road garden in Larkfield.

The 62-year-old lives with his disabled partner Margaret Adams and says she has been 'trapped' inside their home.

Margaret is partially blind and has been unable to use the garden during the spell of good weather as a result of the revolting mess and stench.

Gerard has been calling the company 'two or three times a day' since the start of the month, and says he is 'sickened' by how long it is taking to resolve the issue.

Scottish Water have visited the property to pump the mess from his garden, but Mr O'Neill says two hours after their departure the area is overflown with waste once again.

Mr O'Neill told the Tele: "I've not stopped calling Scottish Water since the pipes burst - the garden has been absolutely disgusting.

"They have come to pump it away, but because they are not actually fixing the issue, the whole place is overflowing two hours later.

"It's disgusting and ridiculous we've been left so long like this.

"My partner is disabled and we sit out in the garden, but she's not been able to come out since this happened as you couldn't sit out here - you would be sick."

Gerard has been out sweeping up the space - which has also been strewn with used loo roll.

He says the sewage poses a wider health hazard as it also spilling onto the public footpath which runs down the side of his property.

He said: "The waste has been spilling onto the path next to us - there are always children passing through it when they are out playing.

"It's so unsanitary and there is a rank smell too, it is absolutely terrible.

"To not be given a timeframe on when this could be sorted out is ridiculous.

"I am at my wits end with it, I don't know what else I can do."

When the Telegraph contacted Scottish Water, bosses there pledged that the matter would be resolved, with a team sent to deal with it yesterday.

They said it had taken time for them to get a contractor in place to fix the fault.

A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “We have been to the address a number of times to clean up the area and also to investigate the cause of the problem.

“It was clear very early on that a repair was required and we quickly began the process of engaging a contractor which can take a number of days.

“They are now on site and will repair the damage to the sewer.

“We will always attend any report of a sewage spill as quickly as we can.”
