A MUCH loved live music event is returning next month with a great new line-up of local talent.

Greenock Cricket Club is bringing back the full 'Gig on the Green' gala after a mini trial run earlier in the year to see if there was still demand for the event post-pandemic.

Following the success of the May event, over 15 acts will take to the stages set up in the Glenpark grounds - including local favourites Durty Mac, Travelling Jukebox and The Laurettes - on Sunday September 4.

New on the bill this year are young band Distillation and Gourock singer/songwriter Joe McMahon, who are both 'delighted' to have been asked to perform by organisers Colin McCahill and club president Charlie Loftus.

Charlie told the Tele: "After the success of the mini Gig on the Green, we knew we wanted to bring it back at its full capacity.

"We are looking forward to welcoming both old and new faces through the door for an afternoon with something for people of all ages.

"It's great to this year give new acts the opportunity to get involved."

Making up Distillation are Clydeview Academy pupils Luke Thomson, Cameron and Arran Peden, Ross Thomson and Rhys Barnes who will be opening the hugely anticipated event.

Ross, 16, said: "We are all so buzzing for the gig, it's such a big deal for us to get it.

"We will be playing covers and maybe one of our originals.

"It'll be great to have friends and family along to watch."

As well as live music, those who attend can expect a beer tent and food outlets and youngsters will have the chance to try out cricket.

Also delighted to be on the bill this year is performer of 30 years Joe who said: "I'm looking forward to performing three of my own songs on the day.

"Since I retired I've been able to dedicate more time to music, so it's great to be involved in Gig on the Green.

"I've been along before, but never had the chance to perform."

Organiser Colin says several of the acts this year are brand new to the bill in a bid to give 'new talent' a platform.

He added: "For us it's about giving new and emerging talent a chance to showcase themselves to a big crowd.

"Those who close for us used to be first on, so it's encouraging for us to see the appetite from youngsters like Distillation - that's what it's all about.

"There will be some familiar faces, but it is a great way to expand and support local talent."

Tickets are priced at £7.50 if purchased in advance or £10 at the door.
