POLICE are working on introducing 'exclusion zones' for repeat shoplifters in Inverclyde in a bid to deter thieves snatching from shelves.

Latest figures show that 134 shoplifting crimes were recorded in Inverclyde between April 1 and June 30, a 33.5 per cent increase on the five-year average.

A new report from Police Scotland states that work on exclusion zones, which would aim to keep repeat offenders away from certain areas, is now at an 'advanced stage'.

Police bosses believe that the new zones will help combat shoplifting locally.
