A NEW morning community initiative that brings people together to start the day the right way is proving to be the toast of the town.

Morton in the Community's 'Breakfast and a Blether' group meets at Cappielow every Wednesday and scores of people have registered to attend the morning support gathering.

They get the chance to enjoy a tasty roll and have a chat with like-minded people.

The initiative is having a life-changing impact on individuals.

Jonny Roy, health and wellbeing manager for Morton in the Community, says he's delighted with the response and reaction to the free weekly event.

He told the Tele: "Breakfast and a Blether has been very well attended and people have been saying how it sets them up for the week ahead.

"We've had a mixture of people of all ages and genders coming along, with everyone getting the chance to chat to like-minded people and reach out to others.

"The Tele have been a huge support, many people have said they read about it in the paper and decided to come along.

"Many of our other support groups, such as Team Talk and walking football, happen later on in the day so it's been great to get people together first thing."

The project has been funded by the Inverclyde Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund and will run up until Christmas and it's hoped it could continue beyond that.

As well as individuals joining in with the group, held in the Morton boardroom each week from 9.30-11am, care and nursing homes can bring residents along too.

Mark Robertson, from Greenock, says the new support group is a great idea.

The 44-year-old told the Tele: "I really enjoy coming along to Breakfast and a Blether.

"I get to meet new pals.

"I've been supported by Morton in the Community for two years now and it has really helped me a lot."

Greenock man Stuart Hawke, who has suffered from anxiety and depression, is another man who has benefited from the get-togethers.

He said: "This new group is great, it really sets you up for the week.

"It's a brilliant social experience, you get to meet people who are also looking for support and you can share your experiences to help one another.

"I love what Morton in the Community do, it is such an integral part of my life."
