FAMILIAR faces are bringing a taste of India to Kilmacolm - and creating eight new jobs in the process.

The village's new restaurant, Nawaab, celebrated its opening in style with an Indian drumming performance and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Owner Zulfi Mohammed has opened the new establishment with the help of son Shan and his nephew Sal Mohammed, who owns Curry Lounge in Port Glasgow.

Shan, who is Nawaab's manager, told the Tele that the family were thrilled to have finally opened the new premises.

He said: "We've had some really good feedback and lots of people coming in.

"We've brought three guys on so far and we're looking for another five to bring on.

"We focus on traditional Indian cuisine with ingredients sourced from top suppliers.

"We've decided to make it a bring your own booze restaurant too, which will help out nearby businesses that sell alcohol.

"We've had the premises since last year, but with the pandemic we've been delaying it until the right time came to open.

"The community up here is great and we're really happy to be part of it.

"It's been hard work but we're really happy to have finally opened."

The family hope locals will get behind their new venue.

Sal, who has been balancing helping his relatives set up shop along with his duties at Curry Lounge, said he was proud to see his family launch another local business.

He added: "The opening day was a real hit, I think people really enjoyed seeing the Indian drummer and we also invited councillor David Wilson to cut the ribbon.

"My uncle wanted to get the word out there and let locals know there's a new restaurant in town.

"David did the ribbon ceremony for Curry Lounge as well so he's always supported our family since day one, it felt right to have him along.

"I really hope things go well in Kilmacolm, it's a lovely village and a great place to set up a restaurant."
