COUNCILLORS have decided on an application to build amenity housing at a former burial ground next to the historic Gourock Ropeworks in Port Glasgow.

Inverclyde Council's Planning Board have backed proposals for a four-storey block of 24 apartments next to the A-listed Ropeworks building.

The plans had proved controversial with some nearby residents and members of the Port Glasgow West Community Council, who raised concerns about the number of remains still within the site and the development's impact on the Ropeworks.

Planners had recommended elected members approve the application provided a legal agreement is put in place to ensure the development would be amenity housing.

Councillors who had attended a site visit last week voted to grant permission subject to conditions, which included a requirement that an archaeological watching brief be undertaken during any excavation works.
