INVERCLYDE Council has announced the full details of this weekend's remembrance services.

There will be traditional commemorations in Greenock, Port Glasgow, Gourock, Kilmacolm, Inverkip and Wemyss Bay.

Church services will take place before wreaths are laid at cenotaphs and war memorials on Sunday.

There will be representatives from Inverclyde Council, the armed forces and local organisations at the ceremonies.

Provost Drew McKenzie, who will attend the commemorations at Wellpark and Lyle Hill, said: “This is a hugely important time of year to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice commemorate during the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

“The names on the war memorials throughout our towns and villages represents the life of someone from our community that was lost in battle.

“Many more suffered serious and life-changing injuries during various conflicts and we also remember their sacrifices.

“On Remembrance Sunday, we unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from Britain and the Commonwealth and honour those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life.”

Following the service in Greenock, Lyle Hill will be the focus with a service to commemorate the personnel of the Free French Navy who were stationed in Greenock during the Second World War.

The Free French memorial on Lyle Hill is currently illuminated in red to support Armed Forces charity Poppyscotland.

There will be a national two minute’s silence on Friday at 11am to mark Armistice Day.
