GREENOCK minister Jonathan Fleming has told of his pride at the huge honour of stepping up to lead Greenock's Remembrance Sunday commemorations.

Rev Fleming was at the helm for the ceremony at Wellpark, followed by the trip to Lyle Hill for a service at the Free French Memorial.

It's the first change in many years, following the retirement of Rev Alan Sorensen as minister of Wellpark Mid Kirk after over 20 years.

Rev Fleming, of Lyle Kirk, says it was the greatest privilege he has had to be asked to lead the service.

He said: "It was a great honour and I was very proud to be involved.

"It is such a privilege to remember all those who gave such tremendous service.

"I think it is of huge significant to us all, as a community and a country.

"It is important that Remembrance Sunday continues to play such a important role in our lives."

Wreaths were laid at the Wellpark Cenotaph and youth and uniformed organisations took part in a parade.

Everyone then made their way to the Lyle Hill where a wreath was laid and tributes were paid to the role of the Free French Navy base in Greenock during the Second World War.

Rev Fleming said: "It was very special to be standing there on the Lyle Hill with representatives from the French Consulate.

"My first degree was in French, so I was able to put it to good use."

His key role continued his strong links to the act of remembrance and saluting the fallen and surviving formed armed forces personnel.

Jonathan said: "I was the padre in Erskine Hospital so I am very familiar with remembrance.
