GREENOCK Prison has one of the highest numbers of unused prison cells according to new data by the Scottish Prison Service.
Information shared with the Scottish Parliament reveals that 38 cells at Gateside - accounting for more than half of all 67 'out of use cells' within HMP Barlinnie, Dumfries, Greenock, Inverness, Kilmarnock and Perth, and 15 per cent of all the cells within the local jail - were not being used as at November 23.
The poor state of the prison was previously discussed at Holyrood, with officials stating scores of cells in Greenock were affected by water ingress.
