A FUNDRAISER in memory of a much-loved local dad who tragically died aged 56 was bang on target as it raised a four-figure sum to help cover the cost of a lifesaving defibrillator in his honour.

The Bullseye Sports Bar on Brougham Street in Greenock hosted a memorial competition for former member David Deveney, known as 'Double D', who sadly suffered a fatal heart attack last January.

As well as holding a darts tournament on the evening, attendees also competed for the inaugural 'David Deveney Memorial Cup' for pool, which was won by his close friend Eddie Varese.

Over 60 people took part in the competitions, with more turning up to show their support for David's family, including his loving wife of 30 years Fiona.

The memorial event, alongside an online fundraiser organised by the former James Walker Devol employee's family, has helped over £4,000 for the defib drive.

Fiona, mum to Heather, Jillian and Scott, told the Tele: "We had the most amazing night.

"The club was packed to the rafters.

"So many of David's friends, family and workmates came along to support us and gave us all a night to remember.

"A massive £1,290 was raised in the club on the night and we're so grateful to Bullseye Sports Bar for allowing us to hold the event there.

"This brings us to an incredible total of £4,205 including the JustGiving online page donations.

"We are going to be able to make such a huge difference with this money."

The family say they sought inspiration from two of David's heroes - World's Strongest Men finalists Luke and Tom Stoltman - when starting the fundraising appeal.

The famous siblings sent a poster to the bar to be displayed in David's memory.
