Burnsians belt out tunes to win coveted Inverclyde Music Festival cup

Youngsters aged 14 and under battled it out in the Burns songs vocal solo class on Tuesday for the Victoria Burns Club Trophy, which is always considered an annual highlight of the festival programme.

Young musician Cameron Steele, of Port Glasgow High, triumphed after impressing judges.

The 13-year-old, who also came first in a violin class that same morning, told the Tele he was 'absolutely delighted' to claim the top spot in the prestigious category.

Cameron, who has not competed in the competition before, told the Tele: "I was so chuffed, I couldn't believe I won.

"It's was really exciting as it was the first time I've ever at the festival, so winning was such a bonus.

"Coming joint first in the violin class too was a real surprise.

"I'm really proud and I think everyone just loves the sense of competition alongside the sense of camaraderie. All of the entrants are so talented."

Competing in the class alongside Cameron were second placed 14-year-old Stella MacEachran, of the High School of Glasgow, Notre Dame pupils Neil O'Neill, 13, Kai Fitzharris, 14, and Lucy McLean, who is 13.

Proud parents David and Margaret Steele were also thrilled to see their son triumph.

Margaret, from Greenock, said: "We were so chuffed for him, I am such a proud mum.

"The kids are all so talented, it's really tough competition.

"To place first in both his classes was amazing, he works so hard at his music."

Dad David added: "I had a tear in my eye when they announced the winners.

"I am so proud of him."
