POLICE are today hunting a masked knifeman who held up a Greenock shop and stole a four-figure sum of cash.

The blade thug struck at 7.30am yesterday at USave on Lynedoch Street.

He threatened a 19-year-old shop assistant while brandishing the weapon.

The suspect is described as white, between 5ft 6' to 5ft 10' tall and of stocky build.

Police say he is aged 'between late 20s to early 40s'.

He was wearing white trainers, grey jogging bottoms, a black jacket with hood up and a white paper COVID type face mask.

Detective Sergeant Martin Clark of Greenock CID said: “Officers are checking CCTV and carrying out local enquiries but are keen to hear from anyone who may recognise the description of the man or who has any information that may assist the investigation.

“We believe the suspect was in the area of Lynedoch Street, Bank Street, Regent Street and Lyle Street prior to the incident and so we are appealing for anyone was in the area, for example delivery drivers, between 7am and 7.30 am to get in touch."
