A LIFELONG dream has come true for the new owner of a well-known Greenock pub as he gets ready to put his own stamp on the popular premises.

Nicolson's Bar and Kitchen on Bruce Street has been taken over by former manager Gary McDowell, who has revamped the premises with a new 'vintage' look.

He says the establishment will have a renewed focus on food and is planning to change the Nicolson's branding in the near future.

Greenock man Gary, who started his hospitality career 15 years ago at Flava in Gourock, told the Tele that taking over the bar was a opportunity he jumped at.

He said: "It's exciting but also quite scary.

"The opportunity came and I thought if I didn't do it now I never would.

"Owning a bar or a cafe is something that I've wanted to do since I was 17.

"I want to make sure that locals and regulars know that although there are changes I've kept the same staff.

"The things that have changed are the ones that I believe will make the place better.

"The name will change but we're still in the process of looking at that right now - I want to make sure it's something I'll still be happy with in 10 years time.

"I'm in this for the long haul.

"My vision for this place is that it's primarily food orientated, I want to make sure that this is known as a restaurant.

"I want to keep the great vibe of the bar but make sure that we're known for our food.

"As the former manager I know what worked and what didn't."

The bar closed for more than a month in early January to undergo its revamp.

Gary said: "I wanted it to have an industrial, vintage vibe.

"We've put candles out on the tables and changed the wallpaper out the back to make things cosier.

"The copper on the walls has a natural oxidisation process that will make it look rusted over time.

"I want this to be a nice place to have a drink with your partner or pals or your family.

"I'm very aware that this is my first time doing this and if customers want to suggest anything we're open to it.

"It's going to be a lot of trial and error, which will be tough, but also exciting.

"All the staff have worked their socks off since we closed down.

"We've been together as a group for so long and I am really happy that I've been able to take over the place."
