AN armed robbery accused forced his way into a flat in Greenock and attacked a man with an axe, it is claimed.

Dennis Morgan, 30, is charged with repeatedly striking the alleged victim on his arm and leg within a ground-floor property on Murdieston Street.

Morgan — who is said to have fled the flat with cash totalling £1,300 — was acting with an accomplice at the time of the alleged incident, prosecutors say.

It is claimed by the Crown that he brandished an axe at the householder and demanded money and controlled drugs.

Morgan is accused of threatening to strike the man with an axe before allegedly hitting him multiple times with it.

It is alleged that he robbed him of the money within the property and assaulted him to severe injury on February 28.

Morgan, of Tasker Street, is said to have attacked the man whilst being subject to two sheriff court bail orders.

The Telegraph told earlier this month how a 28-year-old man had been rushed to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow after a reported serious assault at Murdieston Street.

He was found injured at a flat on February 28.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said at the time: "Around 8.35pm, officers were called to a report of a seriously injured man on Murdieston Street, Greenock.

"The 28-year-old was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

"Enquiries are ongoing."

Morgan appeared from custody at Greenock Sheriff Court on the assault and robbery charge on Wednesday afternoon.

He made no plea through lawyer Aidan Gallagher during a petition hearing in private and was remanded in custody.

The case has been continued for further examination and is due to call again next week.
