A GREENOCK couple who have been embroiled in a dispute with a furniture firm have been given a refund of more than £1,000 after the Telegraph intervened.

Anne and Andrew Black, of Kestrel Crescent, say they were shocked when independent furniture company The Designer Rooms told them they would not cover the costs of repairing sinking seats on their recently purchased sofa.

The pair received their £3,000 suite from the firm in June of last year, before noticing two defects - a tear on the arm of one sofa and a depression in the seat of the other - in December.

Mr Black claims that a technician sent out to assess the issues told him that both were manufacturing defects, however The Designer Rooms later told him that they would only cover repairs for the rip in the arm.

The 62-year-old then became involved in a row with the company as he tried to get them to take responsibility for the repairs to his second sofa.

Mr Black said: "The repair man took one look at it and told me that it shouldn't be happening, he said it was a manufacturing fault.

"The Designer Rooms have said that it's not a design fault - I've been in so many calls and meetings to try and sort this.

"They said the ripped one was a manufacturing fault and fixed it, but they then said the other one wasn't.

"This has taken its toll on my health, at one point I thought I was going to take a heart attack from the frustration.

"I was actually taken to the hospital recently and I'm now getting put on blood pressure tablets.

"We received the sofa in June and it should still be under warranty, they just wouldn't cover it.

"You can feel it's wrong when you sit down.

"We've only had it a short time and we don't feel like the quality is there.

"I feel like we've been ripped off.

"We're trying to get the house done up and this has just took the joy out of it.

"When you buy a new suite you want a guarantee with it, you want it to last.

"You don't expect this to happen.

"They say it's a family-run business, if it is then they would care about the customers they're supplying to."

After being contacted by the Telegraph, a spokesperson for The Designer Rooms said the firm had arranged to uplift the sofa and refund the couple.

They added: "The Designer Rooms are a local family business.

"We took advice from third-party independent furniture technicians, who deemed this sofa as not-faulty.

"We didn't need to, but as a goodwill gesture, we have now refunded and uplifted Mr Black's sofa, and consider this case to be closed."
