VICTORIA Bowling Club got the new season rolling with a successful opening day.

Club members, friends and family gathered on the greens to usher in another year at the historic Greenock club.

President William McKechnie’s niece Elaine Wilson got things underway by throwing the first bowl of the season before the club held a wapenshaw to give members their first go on the green.

Greenock Telegraph:

William told the Tele the club were delighted to get the season underway and were looking to kick on after a successful 125th anniversary year in 2022.

He said: “We had an absolutely fantastic day.

“It was very busy on the green and we held a great wee wapenshaw after the opening to give the guys a chance to try it.

“Everyone went home happy.

“I was so proud to see my wee niece throwing the first bowl, it was a fantastic moment.

Greenock Telegraph:

“It’s my first time being president and I can’t wait to get involved with everything.

“We had a big year last year with the anniversary and we’re hoping to have an even better on this year.

“Last year we invited a club from Renfrew down for a friendly as part of our celebrations and this year we’re going to go up to see them in return, that’s something we’d love to keep going.

“There were quite a few faces along on opening day that we maybe hadn’t seen for a while, which was brilliant.

“Hopefully this is us back to normal after Covid.

“It’s going to be a great year and I’m really looking forward to it.”
